Elisha "Lisha" Riley Williams

ELISHA RILEY WILLIAMS













Elisha Riley "Lisha" Williams (Wylie, Nathaniel,) was born 20 Oct 1842 in Hamilton Co, Illinois , and in 1922 in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co, IL.  He was the son of Wylie & Mahala Bond Williams.  He married (1) Mary Celia Daily 27 December 1859 in Hamilton County, IL and (2) Margaret Josephine Gordon 14 September 1879 in Hamilton County, Illinois.  (1) Mary Celia Daily was born Oct 25, 1843 in Hamilton County, Illinois and died 2 Jun 1879 in Hamilton County, Illinois, USA.  (2) Margaret Josephine Gordon was the daughter of Moses William Gordon and Martha Ellen Stuart.  She was born in 30 Nov 1860 in Jefferson County, IL and died in 1 Sep 1931 in Mt. Vernon, IL 

Elisha Riley Williams Bio: 


  • ELISHA R. WILLIAMS, brick-mason, Mt Vernon, was born in Hamilton County, Ill., October 20, 1842, and is a son of Wylie Williams, of Hamilton County, Ill., and a native of Tennessee. Our subject was reared on the farm and attended the common schools. He came to this county in February, 1882.
  • He manufactures brick and also raises a crop each year.
  • He served three years in the late war, in Company A, Eighty-seventh Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and participated In the battles of Vicksburg, Wilson's Hill, Saline Cross Roads, Pleasant Hill and others.
  • Mr. Williams was married, December 27 1858, to Mary Daily, by whom he had eight children, seven living- Alice L., Elisha M., Emily R., Mahala D., Celia J., Elnora and Zora Z.
  • Mrs. Williams died June 2, 1879.
  • He again married, September 14, 1880; this time to Margaret J. Gordon, by whom he has had two children, one living, Mary E. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and the United Workmen societies, and the Baptist Church. Mr. Williams' father was a soldier in the Black Hawk war, and helped to drive the Indians out of the northern part of Illinois.  He was tomahawked in the right arm during that campaign not far from Vandalia, and was in the battle of Carlough's Grove, and now draws a pension.
